What this Claude usage calculator tells you

This Claude usage calculator prices how you actually use Claude, in chats and in Claude Code, at the rates Anthropic’s API charges. Those are also the rates usage credits charge once you pass a plan’s limits. Put in the model you use, how much you chat and how much you code, and you get a monthly figure you can hold against Pro at $20, Max 5x at $100 and Max 20x at $200. If you already pay for usage credits, the second part tells you whether upgrading would cost you less. We built it because Anthropic publishes plan prices and multipliers but no message counts, so the honest question isn’t “how many messages do I get” but “what is my use worth, and which plan charges me least for it.”

Why no calculator can promise how many messages you get

Because Anthropic doesn’t publish it. Its pricing page says plainly that there’s no fixed message count. What it does publish is that Pro gives at least five times Free’s usage per 5-hour session, Max 5x gives five times Pro and Max 20x gives twenty times Pro, with a weekly limit on top. How far that goes depends on your message length, attachments, conversation length, model and effort level. So this calculator doesn’t guess what a plan covers. It prices your use in dollars at the API rate, and every comparison it makes uses only what Anthropic publishes.

Chatting is cheap. Claude Code is not

At API rates, most chat use is worth less than a Pro subscription, and most coding use is worth far more. Eight chats a day of ten messages each, with some documents, comes to about $15 a month on Claude Sonnet 5 and $36 on Opus 5, using Claude 20 days a month. Even our heavy chat profile, 20 long chats a day, is about $78 on Sonnet 5.

Claude Code is a different scale, because every step Claude takes re-sends your code and conversation. Our typical setting comes to about $12.60 a day on Sonnet 5, or $252 a month. That lines up with Anthropic’s own figures: across company deployments, Claude Code averages around $13 per developer per active day and $150 to $250 a month, and stays under $30 a day for 90% of users. On Opus 5 the same typical day costs $630 a month.

Chat and Claude Code draw on the same plan limits, so a few hours of coding can use up what would have been weeks of chatting.

Pro vs Max: what each dollar buys

Max 5x costs the same per unit of usage as Pro, and only Max 20x is cheaper per unit. Divide each plan’s price by its allowance, counted in Pros: Pro is $20 for one, Max 5x is $100 for five, which is still $20 each, and Max 20x is $200 for twenty, which is $10 each. So Max 5x buys a bigger allowance at the same rate. Max 20x is the only plan that actually lowers the rate.

The plans also differ in what you can use. Free has Sonnet and Haiku only, and no Claude Code. Pro and both Max plans add Opus and Claude Code. Fable is the exception: on Pro it isn’t part of the allowance at all and runs only on usage credits, while on Max you can spend up to half your weekly limit on it at no extra cost.

Usage credits, and when upgrading beats them

Upgrade when your monthly credits bill is bigger than the price gap to the next plan: $80 from Pro to Max 5x, $180 from Pro to Max 20x, and $100 from Max 5x to Max 20x. Usage credits let Pro and Max users keep going past their limits, billed at standard API rates, for both chat and Claude Code, up to $2,000 a day.

The reasoning is simple. Credits only pay for what goes over your allowance. A bigger plan takes in that overflow before charging you anything. So once your credits cost more than the difference in plan price, the bigger plan can’t cost you more, and usually costs less. On Pro’s annual plan, where you pay about $17 a month, the gap to Max 5x is $83.

One detail catches Claude Code users. On a subscription, Claude Code keeps its prompt cache for an hour. Once you’re running on usage credits, the cache lasts five minutes. Step away for a coffee and your next request re-sends the whole context at full price, so the same work can cost more in credits than you’d expect.

How long chats add up

Every message re-sends the conversation so far, so long chats cost more per message. Caching softens this, since repeated history is billed at a tenth of the price on the API, but it doesn’t remove it. On Sonnet 5, sixty messages in one chat come to about $0.75 at API rates. The same sixty messages split into six chats of ten come to about $0.54, 28% less. Starting a new chat when the topic changes is the cheapest habit there is, on any plan.

How we calculate it

• Chat. Words become tokens using the ratios from our token counter: Claude’s current models count about 2 tokens per English word. Each message re-reads the chat so far from the cache (a tenth of the input price) and adds the new part at the cache-write price (1.25 times input).
• Claude Code. Each request carries a 50,000-token context, 90% of it from the cache, and returns 1,000 tokens including thinking. The presets are set so that typical and heavy use on Sonnet 5 land near Anthropic’s published $13 and $30 a day.
• Prices. Anthropic’s published API rates, the same ones in our AI API cost calculator.
• Not included. Images, Research, web search and the Claude apps’ own background instructions, all of which use more of your allowance. Your real usage is always under Settings, then Usage, on claude.ai.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Max worth it?

Only if Pro’s limits keep stopping you. Max 5x charges the same rate per unit as Pro, so you’re paying for a bigger allowance, not a better deal. The clearest sign is your usage credits bill: if you spend more than $80 a month in credits on Pro, Max 5x costs you no more. For very heavy use, Max 20x is the one plan that halves the rate.

How much does Claude Code cost per month?

At API rates, about $150 to $250 a month for a typical developer, by Anthropic’s own figures, and our typical setting gives $252 on Sonnet 5. Opus costs about two and a half times as much for the same work. On Pro or Max, that use comes out of your plan’s allowance first.

Are usage credits worth turning on?

Yes, if a hard stop costs you more than the overflow. Credits only charge for what goes past your limit, so a few heavy days a month usually cost less than upgrading. Set a monthly spend limit in Settings, then Usage, so a long session can’t surprise you.

Can I use my Claude subscription with the API?

No. Pro and Max cover the Claude apps and Claude Code. The API is billed separately through a Claude Console account, and a subscription doesn’t include API usage.

Why did I hit my limit so fast?
